LEIDEN UNIVERSITY (the Netherlands): Assistant Professor in Political Science (International Security)

The Department of Political Science of Leiden University invites applications for a position as assistant professor in political science with an emphasis on international security studies, preferably starting in January 2008, but no later than August 2008. The successful candidate will be offered a five year contract, which is the standard term for junior positions.
The department consists of about 30 faculty members, including many non-Dutch scholars, and has consistently received high ratings in peer reviews of both its teaching and research programs.The department offers a Dutch-language BA program and English-language Masters' programs in Political Science, in Political Science Research, and in International Relations and Diplomacy, at the Leiden and The Hague campuses, attracting a total of nearly 200 new students annually.
Candidates are expected to be able to teach courses in the subfield mentioned, in all these programs. In addition to proficiency in English, fluency in Dutch is an asset, but not a condition: candidates who do not speak or understand Dutch yet are expected to
be able to communicate in Dutch within two years. The teaching load is normally a total of four courses per academic year, in addition to other tasks such as thesis supervision.
The focus of the department's research program is on political institutions (broadly defined), their design, workings, and implications, and candidates are expected to do research related to this program. Applicants must hold a PhD in political science (ABD will be considered), have a promising publication record that includes publications in international refereed journals, and have good teaching evaluations.
